In 1932, Della’s husband asked her to run for sheriff. There were term limits and he couldn’t officially be sheriff again consecutively. She did. She won. She was the first elected female sheriff in the state of Tennessee. He got up the next day, assuming she was sheriff in name only. She told him it was his turn to stay home with the 7 children, she had work to do. And did she ever!
